The I-710 corridor is a critical artery for moving people and goods between the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach (SPB Ports) and State Route (SR) 60. Caltrans and the Metro Board recently suspended the environmental process for the I-710 South Corridor freeway project due to concerns the project would not meet desired outcomes for air quality, equity, mobility and sustainability. The Metro Board has directed staff to re-engage local communities and regional stakeholders in a process that will develop a new approach to delivering benefits and reduce disparities for communities adjacent to I-710.
Metro initiated the I-710 South Corridor Task Force (710 Task Force) to re-evaluate the needs of the corridor, develop multi-modal strategies to meet these needs, identify potential projects and programs in the short and long-term based on those strategies, and create a prioritized investment plan to allow Metro and Caltrans – in partnership with local, state and federal agencies – to implement the recommended projects and programs.
The 710 Task Force was initiated in September 2021 and meets approximately every four weeks. The Task Force meetings are a space for Task Force members to meet, discuss, plan and debate issues related to the I‐710 South Corridor. Ultimately, the 710 Task Force will develop recommendations for multimodal strategies, projects and programs, and an Investment Plan to improve communities and transportation within the I‐710 South Corridor and adjacent communities. The Task Force is expected to report to the Metro Board and State of California with outcomes of the 710 Task Force work by early 2023.
Metro is currently seeking a diverse and committed group of community members representative of the I-710 South Corridor to participate in the Community Leadership Committee (CLC) from March to December 2022 for approximately 4-6 hours per month. The CLC was established by Metro to create a direct participation mechanism and a continuous channel of communication between the 710 Task Force members, residents and workers in impacted communities along the I-710 South Corridor.
