New fares on Metro
Metro has simplified how you pay your fare on bus and rail. It’s called fare capping. Which means the more you ride, the more you will save. These changes make it easier for everyone who pays with TAP to earn free rides.
Fares for Everyone
Whether you ride Metro often or are new to it, we have you covered with the lowest fare possible. Frequent riders will benefit the most.
Regular Fare riders
Never pay more than $5 a day and never more than $18 within seven days.
Reduced Fare: Seniors/Persons with Disabilities
Never pay more than $2.50 a day and never more than $5 within seven days.
Reduced Fare: Students
Never pay more than $2.50 a day and never more than $6 within seven days.
Low Income (LIFE) riders
Choose 20 free rides on transit in LA County (includes two hours of free transfers on Metro).
After the 20 free rides are used, you will use Stored Value to pay per ride until you reach your 1-Day or 7-Day cap.
Students with GoPass
Continue to ride for free with your GoPass TAP card.
How Fare Capping Works
To take advantage of fare capping you need to pay your fare with a TAP card. We encourage all our cash-paying riders to get a TAP card.
- Load Stored Value (money) on a TAP card to pay per ride. (Metro base fare for buses and trains remains $1.75 and includes two hours of free one-way transfers on Metro with each paid ride.)
- Once you reach your 1-Day or 7-Day cap, your rides are FREE!
- When you tap on the bus fareboxes or TAP validators at rail stations, the display will show how much Stored Value (money) is being deducted or if the ride is free.
- All Metro riders with a TAP card can participate in fare capping.
- If you already have an existing TAP card, there is no need to sign up or get a new one.
What Else is New
- All Reduced Fare riders will only pay a base fare of $.75. This is a new, lower base fare for Students K-12 & College/Vocational.
- One base fare for all levels of service, which means no more upcharges on Metro J Line and Express Bus services.
- LIFE participants will choose the 20-free ride option (includes two hours of free transfers). After customers use all 20 free rides, they pay per ride on Metro until they reach their 1-Day or 7-Day cap.
- TAP card expiration dates on new, full fare cards will be extended to 15 years.
- With fare capping, Metro is eliminating the 30-day passes. Now, regular fare riders will pay up to $72 over four weeks, which is less than the previous $100 monthly pass. The discounted promotional fare of $50 for monthly passes will end on June 30, 2023.
What Stays the Same
- Riders will continue to receive 2 hours of free one-way transfers with each paid ride on TAP
- Senior/Disabled riders will continue to take advantage of peak ($.75) and off-peak pricing ($.35).
How to Check Your Progress
When you tap on the bus fareboxes or TAP validators at rail stations, the display will show how much Stored Value (money) is being deducted or whether the ride is free. More detailed information, including your fare capping status, will be available on the TVMs, the TAP app, on taptogo.net or by calling TAP Customer Service at 866.827.8646.
You can also easily check your progress towards a 1-Day or 7-Day cap at taptogo.net/card-status with the new fare capping tool (available on July 1). You do not need to have a TAP account; all you need is your TAP card number, and you will be able to view your fare capping progress and TAP card balance.

Fare Changes
Does Metro still accept cash?
Yes, Metro will continue to accept cash as payment for fares.
I usually pay my fares in cash. How can I participate in fare capping?
If you pay per ride with cash, you will not be eligible for the benefits of fare capping. A TAP card is required to participate in fare capping. There are many places you can purchase a TAP card, including a TAP vending machine, a Metro Customer Center, a TAP vendor or on the TAP app. For a complete list of where to buy at TAP card and load fare, visit taptogo.net.
I’m a cash customer and I want to remain anonymous. Can I still pay fare with a TAP card and remain anonymous?
Yes, you may purchase a TAP card and add fare onboard a bus, at a TAP vending machine, TAP Vendor or Metro Customer Care Center. No personal information is necessary to buy or reload these cards. You will remain anonymous unless you register your TAP card.
I usually buy a Metro 30-day pass, what do I do now?
If you already have Metro passes loaded on your TAP card, they will still work on Metro bus and rail. Starting July 1, Metro will replace passes with fare capping.
With fare capping, you no longer have to pay upfront to receive the benefits of a pass. Instead, load Stored Value onto your TAP card and pay per ride until you reach the 1-Day or 7-Day cap. This way, you are only paying for the rides you take and aren’t overpaying. TAP cards can hold up to $300 of Stored Value. For balance protection and other benefits, register your TAP card on the TAP app or at taptogo.net.
I have a Metro 7-Day and a Metro 30-Day pass on my TAP card. What will happen to those passes on July 1?
Any Metro passes on your TAP card will continue to be valid after July 1. Please note, all Metro passes on the TAP card will used before Stored Value is deducted, so those passes will be activated and used before you can participate in fare capping.
A 7-day regular pass is currently $12.50, why is the 7-Day fare cap $18?
For the last 18 months, Metro has been running a “half-off passes” promotion to support riders through COVID. That promotion is ending and being replaced by fare capping on July 1. The fare cap at $18 costs less than the regular price of a 7-Day pass at $25.
Is Metro still offering 2-hour free transfers in one direction?
Yes, with each paid ride on TAP, riders will receive a two-hour free transfer going in the same direction. However, since these transfers are free, they will not count as paid rides towards either the 1-Day or 7-Day fare cap.
I already have a TAP card, will the new 15-year expiration date apply to my card?
Only new TAP cards will be valid up to 15 years. You can check your card’s expiration date at a TAP vending machine or by registering your card and signing into your TAP account on taptogo.net or in the TAP app.
I usually pay my fares in cash. How do I get a TAP card?
Buying a TAP card is easy. TAP cards can be purchased at TAP vending machines at all Metro Rail and busway stations, at Metro Customer Centers, at over 500 TAP vendors in LA County, online at taptogo.net or by phoning TAP Customer Service at 866.TAPTOGO (866.827.8646). Please wait to convert your plastic card to a virtual card after your 7-day fare cap has ended and before you start your new 7-day fare cap.
Fare Changes - Reduced Fare and LIFE Program
As a LIFE rider, how do I benefit from fare capping?
To benefit from fare capping on Metro, LIFE participants will choose the 20-free regional ride option at the beginning of every month. Once all 20 rides have been taken, LIFE riders will participate in fare capping, where they will use Stored Value to pay for each ride until they reach the 1-Day or 7-Day fare cap. The most a rider will pay is $5 in a day and $18 in a seven-day period.
I am a LIFE rider and supposed to get discounts on Metro Passes. If Metro Passes are no longer offered, do I still get a discount on fare?
Yes, you will still receive a discount on fare. Instead of purchasing a discounted pass each month, you will choose the 20-free regional rides to use on Metro, including two hours of free transfers. Once you have used all 20 rides, you will be able to earn additional free rides on Metro through fare capping. This means you will use Stored Value to pay per ride until you reach the 1-Day or 7-Day cap. After that, all your rides that day or seven-day period will be free.
As a LIFE rider, what happens when I am in the middle of my 7-Day cap and the new month starts?
At the start of the new month, you have the option of choosing the 20 free regional rides to use on Metro. Once you add the 20-rides option to your card, those rides will begin to be deducted each time you tap to board a bus or train. If you would like to continue fare capping (you are close to the 7-Day cap, for example), do not add the 20 free regional rides until you have reached the cap and received your free rides.
Who is eligible for the Reduced Fare base fare of $0.75 on Metro?
Senior 62+, Persons with Disabilities, College/Vocational and K-12 students are eligible for $.75 fares (peak). Seniors and Persons with Disabilities are still eligible for $.35 fares (off-peak).
