Florence Av Bus Priority Lanes Project
Overview
Traffic congestion on local streets steals valuable time and creates safety issues for all street users, particularly those taking public transit to get to and from home, work, school, businesses, and other key locations.
Moving More People Using Existing Infrastructure
Metro has a plan to make it easier to get around LA. Bus service is the backbone of the public transit system, which is why the NextGen Bus Plan reimagined the bus system to focus on providing fast, frequent, reliable, and accessible service. A key element in implementing this plan is the use of bus priority lanes. These lanes would improve bus speeds by 15% or more, increasing service frequency and reliability, as well as enhancing mobility by moving more people within existing infrastructure.
Improving Mobility in LA
The Florence Av Bus Priority Lanes Project is an important step toward building a safer and faster multi-modal transit network in Los Angeles. Located along a 5.4-mile segment of Florence Av, between West Bl and the Florence A Line (Blue) Station, the project would add bus priority lanes in both directions for Metro Line 111 during weekday peak hours from 7–9am and 4–7pm.
How These New Lanes Would Work
- Converts the curbside lane in each direction into a bus priority and right turn only lane on weekdays during peak hours from 7–9am and 4–7pm
- Buses would be planned to run every seven to eight minutes during bus lane hours
- Two general traffic lanes and left turn lanes would be maintained in each direction
- The weekday No Parking restriction for the unincorporated LA County portion of the project, from Central Av to the Florence A Line (Blue) Station, will be updated from 6-8am and 4-6pm to align with the existing City of LA No Parking restriction hours of 7-9am and 4-7pm
Benefits for All Street Users
- Improves speed, frequency and reliability of bus service on the corridor
- Improves safety of crossing streets and walking to nearby bus stops
- Provides dedicated lane for use by people riding bikes and right-turning vehicles
- Improves connections to the A Line (Blue), the K Line, and to major north-south corridors such as Crenshaw Bl, Western Av, Vermont Av, Broadway, and Avalon Bl
- Maintains existing midday, weekend and overnight parking for residents, businesses and visitors to the area
- Provides quick and easy access to jobs, schools, businesses and other key locations along the corridor
