Metro has a plan to ease traffic and deliver a better drive on the SR-91 Freeway. In partnership with Caltrans, Metro is making targeted improvements to the westbound side of SR-91 in the cities of Artesia and Cerritos. This heavily traveled stretch—especially near the I-605 interchange—experiences frequent congestion and a higher-than-average number of accidents. Closely spaced ramps add to the problem.

The Westbound SR-91 Improvement Project will add a new lane and reconfigure outdated interchanges, which will improve ramp spacing to help traffic flow more smoothly and safely. The project improvements would reduce bottlenecks and improve travel times for commuters, residents, and businesses.

Alongside these freeway upgrades, the project will also improve access for people walking and biking near the corridor. New sidewalks, better connections, and smarter traffic systems will make it easier—and safer—to get around.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are these improvements needed?

The project area suffers from serious congestion and accident rates above the statewide average, especially near the I-605 connector ramps. The current layout lacks the capacity to handle growing demand and safe merging distances.

What will the project add or change?

The project will add one mixed-flow lane on westbound SR-91, convert interchange loops to more efficient designs, improve connector ramps to I-605, and enhance pedestrian and bike access near interchanges.

What areas will benefit from the project?

Artesia and Cerritos residents, businesses, and commuters using SR-91 and I-605 will benefit through shorter travel times, improved safety, and more reliable traffic flow.

What is the Preferred Alternative?

The selected design includes a reduced-width lane option and reconfiguration of ramps at Pioneer Boulevard to improve safety and reduce property impacts.

How does this project affect bike and pedestrian access?

New sidewalks and potential bike lanes will be added where none currently exist, especially near Bloomfield Avenue and Pioneer Boulevard.
