Overview
As part of our plan to make it easier to get around, Metro is working to develop a framework to mitigate VMT impacts from highway projects and provide greater mobility options throughout the county. Senate Bill (SB) 743 requires projects to mitigate or reduce vehicle trip lengths to meet the state’s emissions reductions goals. This program will allow Metro to identify multi-modal elements to incorporate into highway projects or fund alternative projects or programs in support of reducing VMT and correlated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, furthering our sustainability efforts.
Status
Development of the VMT Mitigation Program will begin in Spring 2022 with Metro staff and stakeholders selecting a methodology for evaluating VMT of LA County highway projects. In the Summer and Fall of 2023, Metro staff and stakeholders will evaluate mitigation criteria, tool development, and select a mitigation framework. The Program is targeted for completion in early 2024.
