The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is set to hold a virtual Energy Resiliency Summit on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. PST to share innovative solutions among industry peers and other interested parties.
Energy resiliency is the ability to withstand or recover quickly from a power disruption, i.e. how to keep trains and electric buses moving if there is a power failure. This is an increasingly critical component of Metro’s long-range planning efforts.
This virtual event is the final event in a three-part Energy Resiliency Series. These events are intended to explore whether Metro can “be up while the grid is down.”
“Metro is leading a bold movement to reimagine Los Angeles County, one that expands mobility, increases access and advances environmental stewardship, said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. “We are committed to thoughtfully and strategically fighting and mitigating the effects of climate change and we intend to reduce L.A. County’s carbon footprint.”
Washington will open the summit, which will feature presentations on proposed energy resiliency solutions selected through Metro’s recent Request for White Papers from industry leaders. In addition, a keynote speaker and a facilitated panel featuring sustainability experts from the region will discuss the roadmap to energy resiliency.
he expert panel will be moderated by Heather Repenning, Metro’s Executive Officer of Sustainability Policy, and Thomas Small, current Chair of Metro’s Sustainability Council. Panelists will include: Lauren Faber O’Connor – Chief Sustainability Officer, City of Los Angeles; Gary Gero – Chief Sustainability Officer, L.A. County; NancyPfeffer – Executive Director, Gateway Cities Council of Governments; Nancy Sutley – Chief Sustainability Officer, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and; Dr. Cris Liban – Chief Sustainability Officer, LA Metro.

As Metro continues to electrify its bus fleet and expanding its rail network, the agency is seeking cost effective and energy efficient solutions that continue Metro’s focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other negative impacts on human health and the environment.
To help achieve this goal, Metro has asked firms to submit White Papers on clean energy technologies and systems. Metro staff has chosen three firms — including GDS Associates, Indian Energy LLC, and Gannett Fleming — to present their ideas and solutions during the Summit.
