La Brea Av Bus Priority Lanes Project
Overview
Traffic congestion on local streets steals valuable time and creates safety issues for all street users, particularly those taking public transit to get to and from home, work, school, businesses, and other key locations.
Moving More People Using Less Infrastructure
Metro has a plan to make it easier to get around LA. Bus service is the backbone of public transit, which is why the NextGen Bus Plan reimagined the bus system to focus on providing fast, frequent, reliable, and accessible service. Bus priority lanes are key to successfully implementing this plan. These lanes would improve bus speeds by as much as 15% or more, increasing service frequency and reliability, as well as enhancing mobility by moving more people without adding more infrastructure.
Improving Mobility in LA
The La Brea Av Bus Priority Lanes Project is an important step toward building a safer and faster multi-modal transit network in Los Angeles. The initial phase of the project will add bus priority lanes in both directions on La Brea Av, between Sunset Bl and Olympic Bl, and will be in operation on weekdays, from 7-9am and 4-7pm. The project also proposes to add bus priority lanes in both directions on La Brea Av, between Olympic Bl and Coliseum St, which would operate on weekdays from 7-10am and 3-7pm.
How These New Lanes Would Work
- Converts the curbside lane in each direction into a bus priority and right turn only lane on weekdays during peak hours from 7-9am and 4-7pm on the segment from Sunset Bl to Olympic Bl, and between 7-10am and 3-7pm on the segment from Olympic Bl to Coliseum St.
- Buses would run every seven to eight minutes during bus lane hours
- Two general traffic lanes and left turn lanes would be maintained in each direction. Drivers can use the bus priority lanes to make right turns at intersections and driveways.
- One-hour extension of existing weekday No Parking restriction in the mornings and evenings on the segment from Olympic Bl to Coliseum St
Benefits for All Street Users
- Improves speed, frequency and reliability of bus service on the corridor
- Improves safety of crossing streets and walking to nearby bus stops
- Improves connections to the E Line (Expo), Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project (currently under construction) and the nearby B Line (Red) at Hollywood/Highland
- Maintains existing midday, weekend and overnight parking for residents, businesses, and visitors to the area
- Provides quick and easy access to jobs, homes, businesses, and other key locations such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, West Hollywood Gateway Shopping Center, Rancho Cienega Recreation Center and Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza
